The City Council is the governing body of the City, except as otherwise provided in the Charter, and enacts ordinances subject to the approval or veto of the Mayor. It orders elections, levies taxes, authorizes public improvements, approves contracts, and adopts traffic regulations.

The Los Angeles City Council is the lawmaking body for the city government of Los Angeles, California, the second largest city in the United States. It has 15 members who each represent the 15 city council districts that are spread throughout the city's 501 square miles of land.

A Mayor, City Controller, and City Attorney are elected by City residents every four years. Fifteen City Council members representing fifteen districts are elected by the people for four-year terms, for a maximum of three terms.

The elected government is composed of the Los Angeles City Council with 15 city council districts and the mayor of Los Angeles, which operate under a mayor–council government, as well as several other elective offices.

Los Angeles County has 88 municipalities within its boundaries, each governed by a city council and, in some, a mayor with executive powers (a "strong mayor"). Most of these city councils appoint a professional city manager to serve as the city's chief executive and supervise day-to-day municipal operations.

City Council members serve on a number of Council Committees, each of which is chaired by a City Councilmember. All Council matters are referred between the Council and Council Committees based on the adopted Council Committee Structure resolution.
