The Rangers won a big one Monday, beating the rival Islanders 4-0 to move into a tie with Detroit for the second wild-card spot.

Igor Shesterkin faced 40 shots Sunday and another 37 against the Islanders on Tuesday while managing to earn consecutive wins.

Shesterkin, who dealt with an upper-body injury throughout the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off break, practiced fully on Thursday and declared himself ready to play when the Rangers return with back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday in Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

And while that’s positive news for the Rangers, who had said the goalie would be sidelined one to two weeks after seemingly suffering the injury near his lower arm in a scrum in front of the goalmouth, the real question is, what version of Shesterkin will they see?

The New York Rangers made goaltender Igor Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in NHL history in December, but he hasn't played like it.

Surely, if Igor Shesterkin plays the rest of the season the way he did on Sunday, when he made 36 saves – many of them spectacular – to steal a 5-3 win for the Rangers over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Rangers will get into the playoffs. His next test is Tuesday night against the Islanders at UBS Arena.
