A wildfire whipped up by extreme winds is sweeping through a Los Angeles hillside dotted with celebrity residences. Homes have burned and tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders, some of whom abandoned cars and fled on foot due to clogged roads.

Gavin Newsom says many structures ... best known as one-third of the folk-music group Peter, Paul and Mary, has died at age 86. Peter Yarrow died Tuesday at his home in New York.

Gov. Gavin Newsom recently announced the appointments of two Bay Area residents, one to a state rail authority and the other to a state commission. Newsom named Peter Whippy, of Alamo, to Chief of External Affairs at the California High-Speed Rail Authority.

It is the strongest response Newsom has made so far in the week since the fires first erupted in the Los Angeles area.
