The Detroit Red Wings have done little during the NHL offseason. On the second day of the 2025 NHL Draft, Detroit made its biggest move by acquiring goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks for goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round selection.

Even without Marner, the Maple Leafs still should have the inside track to the third divisional spot — they’re deep down the middle and have star goal scorers in Auston Matthews and William Nylander, plus a steady top four on the blue line — though they do suddenly look much more vulnerable if injury strikes.

The Detroit Red Wings’ quest to end a nine-year playoff drought will begin Thursday, Oct. 9 at home against the Montreal Canadiens. Detroit’s full 82-game schedule was released Wednesday, with the slate opening against a division rival and concluding with a showdown against the defending Cup champion Florida Panthers on April 15 in Sunrise.
