Wondery’s audio-only podcasts — such as the true-crime hits “Dr. Death” and “Dirty John” — will be now be overseen by Audible, the audiobook arm of Amazon, and earn money primarily through subscriptions.

In a memo to staff obtained by Deadline, Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, said the rise of video podcasting has created “different audience needs” and requires “distinct discovery, growth, and monetization strategies” compared to traditional audio-only narrative podcasts.

In a statement to The Verge, Amazon spokesperson Alice Zhou confirmed that while Wondery will continue to produce podcasts, its narrative-driven studio, which has developed shows like Dr. Death, American Scandal,
