That could have been the soundtrack for pitchers David Bednar and Jake Bird, two relievers on last-place teams who ran into each other unexpectedly in the Denver airport early Friday morning and boarded a flight to Miami to join the Yankees, who acquired them at the trade deadline Thursday.

Before Thursday’s trade deadline closed, Colorado traded Bird to the Bronx for second baseman Roc Riggio and left-hander Ben Shields. Riggio was the Yankees’ No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and Shields was their No. 29 prospect.

Not even an hour after the Yankees acquired Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar, the club traded for Colorado Rockies middle reliever Jake Bird in exchange for second baseman Roc Riggio and left-handed starter Ben Shields, a league source told The Athletic.
